Accommodations in Vienna
Empress Sisi and music are closely tied to Vienna, Austrias welcoming and authentic capital. The 13th-century Habsburg dynasty built sumptuous palaces and in the 18th century, it became the Imperial city, remaining so until World War I. During World War II it was annexed to Austria but remained under allied rule. It was in 1955 that Austria gained its independence. The sound of the waltz will resound in your head while you visit the magnificent city of Vienna. Start your tour at the Imperial Palace, Hofburg, the grand residential complex of the Habsburg Emperors that houses many an imperial salon, the Sisi Museum and in the Austrian National Library you will see a true example of Baroque architecture in the lounge. Nearby is the museums quarter that has 60,000 square metres dedicated to art exhibitions.
Not far away is the Parliament with the statue of Athena at the door, the City Hall (Rathaus) built in the 19th century and in the same neo-Gothic style as the Votiva Church (Votivkirche) that stands next to it. In front of the city hall, you will see the Royal Theatre, one of the worlds most splendid theatres, and in the opposite direction beyond the Burggarten gardens you will see the neo-Renaissance Opera House. From here, after taking Karntner St, one of Viennas most elegant avenues, you will come to St. Stevens Cathedral, a Gothic church whose south tower, brilliantly nicknamed Steffi, offers a splendid view of Vienna from its height of over 100 metres. Near the Danube canal you will find Viennas oldest church, St Ruperts, that was built in the 8th century and on the other side of the canal, in Prater Park, visitors can take a ride on the gigantic ferris wheel and enjoy the view from the top.
Dont leave Vienna without visiting the Schönbrunn Palace, the imperial familys summer residence in olden times, a Baroque building surrounded by garden after majestic garden that is not only pleasant to the eye, but also houses the oldest zoo in the world! Outside the wall is the High Palace of Belvedere, with artwork from the middle Ages and Baroque works, together with paintings by Gustav Klimt on the ground floor.
