Tourism in Cancun
Cancun belongs to the Mexican municipality of Benito Juárez, which has a beach of 22km in length. The quality of those beaches is recognized throughout the world, including the World Tourism Organization. Coupled with this, it has a tropical climate, and so bathing on the beach can be done at any time of year, meaning that this destination is always considered by many tourists at any time or season. Since the early 1970s when the first hotel was built, the tourist industry has been growing continuously.
But tourism in this area is not only based on sun and sand, there are many other points of historical and cultural interest to highlight, many of them being world heritage sites, such as Chichén Itzá, an archaeological site and the most important religious center, political and economic for the Maya civilization. Other places of interest in Cancun are Chetumal, Cozumel, Holbox, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen or Riviera Maya where on can practice different water sports, adventure sports or enjoy relaxing sunsets. Merida, one of the most important cities in Mexico, with quite a tradition which alternates the frenetic pace of the big cities of today, or Yucatan, one of the natural paradises in the area, bathed by the Gulf of Mexico, are other attractions in the area which surely will tempt any traveler.
